This is shown by a systematic review and meta-analysis of 29 studies by the Keck School of Medicine . Posts from influencers, advertisements and all other types of publications on social media were included. Details were published in “Jama Network”.
Authorities are required
“The results suggest that a comprehensive strategy to reduce the amount of tobacco content on social media should be developed by US federal authorities,” the portal comments. “Such measures may have downstream effects on adolescents’ and young adults’ exposure to pro-tobacco content and ultimately on tobacco use behavior.”
Initiatives to better educate youth about the clandestine marketing practices of tobacco companies could also help address this problem.
“Social media has given the tobacco industry new opportunities to promote its products, particularly to teenagers and young adults. Of particular importance is the fact that people who had never used tobacco before were also more susceptible. This suggests that exposure to tobacco-related content may stimulate interest and potentially lead non-users to begin smoking.”
