Social media has changed the way experts view the war in Ukraine. In addition to the experts appearing everywhere, there are personal impressions from people in the country itself and refugees, which are disseminated online. Stories of families separated and forced from their homes with their children are reminiscent of those who have come from other war zones in recent years - but there is arguably one crucial difference: Although they are scattered around the world, Ukrainians - including many academics – speaking directly and unfiltered to the world about their plight.

Example pop video in ruins

A recent example is the pop video filmed in the ruins of Bucha and Irpin and released by the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra shortly after their song “Stefania” triumphed at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin.

As the video of female soldiers rescuing children became a viral sensation, racking up more than 17 million views on YouTube alone, Kateryna Zarembo, who fled Kiev with her children without her husband, tweeted about how the pop group had cleverly circumvented Eurovision's strict "no politics" rules to bring the atrocities of war to a new global audience.

“Smart timing, courageous positioning and professionalism are a recipe for success,” says the lecturer, who taught at the National University of Kiev and now works at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

These immediate reflections on the war via Twitter threads or longer articles are not just about getting retweets or likes.

“Academics can provide strategic insights that really show what’s going on,” Zarembo says.

Articles by Yale University researcher Timothy Snyder and University of Copenhagen analyst Maria Mälksoo that frame the war in terms of Russia's colonial ambitions have helped change the political perception of the conflict.

“These things help to change minds in Brussels and Berlin,” emphasizes Zarembo.
