Hand creams in the test: The team at Öko-Test magazine has now tested 50 hand creams for harmful ingredients, examined them closely and found some carcinogenic substances.
Dry and cracked skin on the hands can be very uncomfortable, especially in winter. Hand creams that provide moisture and a protective oily film are therefore popular. The results range from “very good” to “unsatisfactory”.
What is striking is that all of the natural cosmetic creams tested received a “very good” grade. No questionable ingredients could be detected. These include creams from the brands “Alviana” and “Lavera”.
But not all products received such a good rating.
Hand creams from the brands “O'Keeffe's”, “Dove”, “Eucerin” and “Bepanthol” were rated “unsatisfactory”. They contain substances such as diazolidinyl (probably releases carcinogenic formaldehyde), paraffins/silicones (irritate the skin's balance), PEG (skin becomes more permeable to pollutants), MOAH (can be carcinogenic) and Lilial (considered harmful to reproduction). Organohalogen compounds were also detected in the Working Hands hand cream from “O'Keeffe's”, some of which are banned because of their environmental harm and toxic potential.
Öko-Test therefore recommends natural cosmetic products and manufacturers. These can often be found in the affordable price range.
