“Dear first graders,…”

We are currently receiving many inquiries about a photographed letter that the local SPD branch in Zirndorf is said to have given to first graders. In fact, the first graders are welcomed by the “SPD city council function Zirndorf” (as it says in the letterhead), and there is also a short section about Zirndorf schools and the local association’s commitment. But the reason for the excitement is the last section of text, which is marked in red in the photo:

“By the way: The state and district elections will take place in Bavaria on October 14, 2018. It is important that as many people as possible go to the polls. The SPD has stood for social justice in our country since its founding. That's why please tell your parents that they should definitely go to the polls and vote for the SPD. Simply tick the SPD. Then your parents did everything right.”

Does this letter really exist?

In short: yes. The SPD Zirndorf has been distributing these letters as part of the “Lunch boxes for those starting school” campaign for ten years, local chairman Markus Trautmann explained to the DPA (German Press Agency) on Saturday (September 15, 2018).

The SPD Zirndorf also emphasized in a Facebook statement that such letters are placed in lunch boxes every year, this year with reference to the upcoming state elections.

The legal supervision brought in by the Free Voters and the CSU should now clarify whether the letters represent election manipulation or influence.

In addition, we would like to add a statement from the SPD Zirndorf at this point

This was published on Facebook on September 14, 2018:

Dear Zirndorf residents,

We were astonished to see the waves our decades-long “lunch boxes for school starters” campaign had caused.

For your understanding, we distribute lunch boxes with the SPD logo to all first graders every year, which contain, among other things, a muesli bar and a sharpener. As has been the case for many years, a letter from the SPD Zirndorf was enclosed. Due to the upcoming state elections, our party was also advertised here and pointed out that we have great and modern schools and kindergartens in Zirndorf. We think that this is not a given even in Germany and that there are unfortunately too many outdated and dilapidated schools. The fact that you can enjoy a free education in Germany is a privilege and we think it is important that the children and parents do not take this for granted.

Because of this letter we have now been attacked severely and sometimes below the belt. Legal supervision was even called in because of election manipulation. One can disagree about the contents of the letter, but this reaction is beyond exaggerated and unjustified. Election campaign or not, the aim here was overshot.

We will continue to delight the first graders with our lunch box campaign in the future.
Fortunately, this is well received by most students and parents and is not perceived as annoying. The entire atmosphere of the excited children looking forward to their first day of school and the proud parents who now have a school child is simply beautiful to see. For us, this atmosphere is always a sign that it is worthwhile for the citizens of Zirndorf to contribute their free time and commitment so that Zirndorf remains a great and livable city like it is for us.

We will not continue to waste our energy on agitation and complaining like other parties, but will instead devote our energy to our motto “Doing good for Zirndorf and its citizens”.

Best regards

Your
SPD Zirndorf
