Are there perhaps alternatives to feeling fit again after jogging? Oh yes! Thirsty after sport? Weary? And now? First of all, a super-hypo-iso drink or something? You can do it, it usually doesn't do any harm in moderation: In technical jargon, these would be “hypotonic” or “isotonic” drinks.

The joke is: simple mineral or tap water or water into which you pour a little apple juice (the famous spritzer) works the same way!

The liquid itself is the most important thing - with minerals (mineral water) and glucose (fruit juice) it gets even better. As a rule, there is nothing better in the “sports drinks” or “isodrinks” - or the other way around: As long as the mixing ratio is right, an apple juice spritzer is just as “isotonic”, it just doesn't say so. Ideal: 1 part juice, 3 parts mineral water. Pure juice has minerals and vitamins (which is also worth a lot), but it doesn't work so well to balance fluids: it is "hypertonic", just like energy drinks (sweetened ones, with calories).

Great, three terms that no one can tell apart. So:

A lot of particles (minerals, glucose) are found in dissolved form in the blood. In principle the same thing applies to drinks: depending on the drink, there are different numbers of such dissolved particles in it, for example a whole lot in pure fruit juice or energy drinks. The body can absorb liquid well if a drink contains fewer or at most the same number of these dissolved particles as the blood - if there are more in the drink than in the blood, the body has to "organize" additional liquid in order to dilute the whole thing and finally process it to be able to do that - he lacks that, and that doesn't make him fit at all...

OK? To put it bluntly: the denser the broth you drink, the more likely you are to add liquid yourself afterwards.

This means for the drinks bar:

Hypotonic drinks : (e.g. mineral water or tap water): Here the drink has fewer particles than blood. The fluid intake goes away like a suppository: no problem, no more thirst.

Isotonic drinks : (e.g. juice spritzer): a draw – the concentration is the same. This works quite well, the body still absorbs the liquid without any problems.

Hypertonic drinks : (e.g. pure fruit juice or energy drinks): The drink has more particles than blood - and now the body needs its own fluid to process it. It may not make you thirstier, but a real quencher is something else.

Well, these trendy drinks obviously want to convey that it doesn't work without them, but there are no scientific arguments for it. There is a solid argument for plain water or spritzer: they cost significantly less.

And as far as staying awake: “ energy drinks ” and similar representatives are not about fluid balance or fitness, but rather just about getting pumped up. The “performance and concentration enhancer” is usually just plain caffeine - other exotic-sounding ingredients include taurine, inositol or L-carnitine.

Caffeine, taurine, inositol or L-carnitine

Caffeine is a well-known ingredient in coffee, tea or cola. Has a stimulating effect. Caffeine is also hidden behind terms such as guarana, mate, kola nut or cocoa. Not bad per se, but if the amounts are too high it can lead to undesirable effects such as nervousness, rapid heartbeat or insomnia. A large can of energy drink already contains quite a bit of caffeine in one go.

Taurine is a protein building block that is produced in the body itself and is therefore available in sufficient quantities. There is no evidence that it affects performance. Inositol , also known as muscle sugar, is a sweet-tasting sugar alcohol. Sufficiently present in the body (muscles). The body produces much more than is consumed through food. It serves as a messenger substance in the brain, which is why it is often used in energy drinks. L-carnitine also produced by the body and is also found in many everyday foods. It is therefore not necessary additionally, even for endurance sports.

Energy drinks often contain added vitamins. This additional intake beyond the normal diet is not necessary. Vitamins are usually added that we consume in sufficient quantities through food.
