From June 1, 22, the fuel discount will relief of 30 cents for Super and 14 cents for Diesel. The editorial team of the consumer portalvergleich.org has put together an example of how the composition of the fuel price changes at different gas station prices - and how much of this goes to the oil companies' share.

MIMIKAMA
  • Diesel price of around €1.50 : The contribution margin, which also contains the profits of the oil companies, is 28 cents per liter.
  • Diesel price of around €1.80: At this price the contribution margin is 34 cents.
  • Diesel price of around €2.20: Compared to the diesel price of €1.50, the contribution margin here is more than twice as much at 61 cents per liter.

Rising oil prices are currently presenting German households with challenges. The federal government wants to counteract this with a relief package.

An evaluation byvergleich.org shows: The contribution margin for diesel, which also contains the profits of the oil companies, increases by more than double at a diesel price of €2.20 compared to €1.50, while taxes increase increase only slightly and even decrease proportionately.

Trading costs: petrol station price plus CO₂ price, petroleum storage levy and contribution margin

The trading costs are the petrol station price minus energy tax and VAT. It consists of the purchase price, the CO₂ price, the oil storage levy and the contribution margin.

CO₂ price and oil storage levy

The CO₂ price, i.e. the price for carbon dioxide emissions, is set in absolute terms and amounts to 7.20 cents per liter for petrol and 8.03 cents per liter for diesel.

The petroleum storage levy is a levy for the creation of a strategic oil reserve in the event of a short-term supply shortage and amounts to just 0.27 cents per liter for petrol and 0.3 cents per liter for diesel.

Oil companies' contribution margin at record high

The contribution margin is variable and includes costs for sales, administration, transport and gas station lease. In addition to the price of crude oil, the profits of the oil companies are also hidden here and cannot be broken down further. However, it can be assumed that these were very large during the period of particularly high price increases.

The contribution margin on March 24th, 2022 at a diesel price of €2.20 was a full 61 cents, while on March 2nd, 2022 at a price of €1.80 it was only slightly higher at 34 cents than in October 2021 at 28 cents (diesel price 1.50€).

The proportion of taxes falls as fuel prices rise

The energy tax is absolute and amounts to 65.45 cents per liter for petrol and 47.04 cents per liter for diesel. The VAT is 19% of the total price, so for diesel with a total price of €2.20 it is 34.90 cents.

Overall, the taxes on diesel with a price of €1.50 come to 71.1 cents per liter (47.20%), with a price of €1.80 to 75.8 cents per liter (42.10%) and with one Price from €2.20 to 81.9 cents per liter (37.49%). As oil prices rise, taxes fall proportionately.

Current breakdown of the fuel price

As of the dispatch date of the press release (May 23, 2022), the diesel price is broken down as follows: The gas station price of 2.00 euros is made up of:

  • Purchase price: 67 cents
  • Contribution margin: 46 cents
  • CO2 certificate costs: 8 cents
  • Petroleum storage levy: 0.3 cents
  • Energy tax: 47 cents
  • VAT: 32 cents
