We and our content partner at checked4you receive comments like this all the time - even if we can't help in individual cases. But we can give you a possible reason for such bans. Do you use apps that promise you statistics about your profile or special information?
“XProfile” and “Reports+” are among other such applications. Google's Play Store showed more than 10 million installations for both in February 2021. There are also several others with similar names. They want to provide you with “exclusive data” that you don’t get from Instagram itself. For example, who has visited or “unfollowed” your profile. In response to our request, a spokeswoman for the social network emphasized: “It violates our terms and conditions if an app claims to make this functionality available to users.” The result: Anyone who uses such apps can, in the worst case, be blocked on Instagram!
Instagram doesn't recognize apps
But why doesn’t Instagram block such risky apps directly? The answer gets a bit technical. With such analysis apps you should log in with your Instagram access data. At “XProfile,” for example, the login page even looks almost like the real one from Instagram. Something like this is also typical of phishing .
If they have your login details, the apps and their developers can become active on Instagram on your behalf. For example, you can like, comment and make automated data requests. But it always looks like you did that. Instagram's security systems cannot detect that there is an app behind it. They are prepared to react to “unusual behavior”. Such conspicuous behavior can, for example, be a lot of data requests in a short period of time that a human could not do so quickly.
The automation on Instagram only recognizes your account and restricts functions or sends emails to the address you provided. You should then confirm that you are actually human. Therefore, it is important: Your email address should be up to date and you should always check for mail there! In this article we will explain how you can tell whether an email from Instagram is real .
Account blocked or hijacked
If you don't respond to emails or have violated the network's rules several times, your account can even be blocked. Then all you can do is file an objection and hope that Instagram reactivates your account. It's impossible to say how long this will take. According to Instagram, each appeal is assessed individually by employees. Another horror scenario is of course that the operators of such “statistics apps” directly take over your account, change your access data and thus lock you out completely.
at the account status of your Instagram profile from time to time. Insta wants to show whether your account is classified as suspicious and may be about to be blocked. You can read more about it here .
This is how you recognize conspicuous apps
Unfortunately, there are no Instagram lists where you can see whether an app violates the platform's guidelines. But: Basically, you should stay away from programs that want to give you more information about your channel than Instagram provides in the insights! Because if Instagram doesn't provide such information - where are the apps supposed to get it from?
And check out the comments in the stores ! You can often find warnings from other users there, such as in the Play Store for the app “Followers+ Reports for IG” on February 14, 2021 (translated from English): “The app hardly does what it promises in its false advertising. Even after paying for the full version NOTHING changed. I emailed them and got no response.”
Get rid of questionable app
If you want to get rid of an app like this, you shouldn't simply delete it from your smartphone! Check beforehand whether you can log out of the app or delete your account. Otherwise, the app operators may still have access to your Insta account even after it has been deleted. If they have saved your login data, this would of course also be the case after you log out. That's why it's better not to let it get to that point. Hands off!
Check logins and change password!
If you have used a questionable app and have now removed it from your phone, be sure to carry out the following steps in your Instagram account:
- Terminates active logins. To do this, tap on the three lines at the top right of your profile page, then tap Settings, then Security and then Login Activity. You will see a list with the heading “You are currently logged in here”. Except for the entry at the top (“Now active”), you should delete all the others! To do this, tap on the three dots to the right of the relevant entry and then tap Logout.
- Change your Instagram password! You should only do this after you have logged off all connections! Because active logins often remain active even with other passwords. To change the password, you can either use the button that Instagram offers after logging out of a login or you can go to the back arrow in the top left and tap Password.
