Prices in supermarkets have been rising rapidly since the beginning of this year. For example, the price of Obazda has increased by 30 cents to 1.99 euros, and the price of rapeseed oil has roughly quadrupled.
Prices: 24 products in check
In order to examine further products and their price changes, we put together a shopping cart made up of 24 products from different categories such as milk, grains, meat and drugstore items and have it analyzed by Sven Reuter, the developer of a price comparison app.
Price increase by about a third
On average, the prices in our shopping cart have increased by almost 31.5 percent. Butter and grain products have increased by almost 40 percent due to a lack of raw materials. But drugstore products have also skyrocketed in price. Nivea soap has become almost 90 percent more expensive - according to Reuter, this is a “windfall effect” because the price increase is incomprehensible.
Various reasons for price increase
In contrast to previous years, prices have not only increased at the beginning of the year, but for some products have now increased three times this year. When asked, manufacturers cite increased energy and transport costs, higher raw material prices, higher wages and more expensive packaging as reasons.
Disproportionate price increase
Large supermarket chains are currently in negotiations with some manufacturers - and they too complain about their high price expectations. Edeka and Rewe accuse manufacturers of taking advantage of the wave of inflation and increasing their margins disproportionately. Therefore, they are now increasingly relying on cheaper own brands. And our expert also sees the manufacturers as price drivers. Price increases are necessary, but not to the current extent.
