We from the “Mimikama Association for Education on Internet Abuse” (better known on Facebook as ZDDK - think first, then click ) are calling on Facebook to stop the distribution of images and videos that glorify violence.

For this petition we have created a page on Facebook called “ We will no longer tolerate this ”. This page is intended to provide our supporters with information.

On April 12, 2014, we published a photo on this page with which we wanted to show the Facebook community which photos Facebook deletes and which photos/videos Facebook does NOT delete.

This photo was about:

(Note: We have blacked out the elbow. Not that FB has come up with the idea of blocking our preview images of our site Winking smiley )

This photo was deleted from Facebook because it did not meet “Facebook Community Standards”:

At the same time, all of the administrators' private profiles - as well as the SITE itself - were blocked:

We admins had to go through the “Terms and Conditions” stuff that was written in English and confirm that we would no longer post images that went in that direction.

We were just able to reactivate the page itself on Facebook (April 17, 2014).

We couldn't have wished for a better example than Facebook removing photos that have absolutely nothing to do with violence, nudity and pornography, but leaving photos and videos online in which violence and death can be seen.

But it is also clear that Facebook uses image recognition software that scans photos. But if this very “ellegnbogen photo” were deleted in 2012, one would think that Facebook had learned here and adapted the image recognition software. But as you can see, this did NOT happen.

Therefore, it is once again up to us users to do something about it. Please support our concerns and sign our petition !

Press release

Petition from Mimikama.at: Child abuse, animal torture, beheaded people and corpses - this and similar despicable material regularly finds its way into Facebook's news channels. The operator does almost nothing to prevent such activities. By collecting declarations of support, Mimikama.at, the association for the investigation of Internet abuse, now wants to persuade Facebook to take action.

Facebook is being asked to stop the distribution of violent images.

Vienna, April 2014: “It is an absurdity that Facebook reacts extremely slowly or not at all to posts that glorify violence,” says Tom Wannenmacher, founder of Mimikama.at and the platform “Think first – then click” (ZDDK) indignantly. Specifically, it's about inhumane photos and videos, animal cruelty and the denigration of disabled people - material that repeatedly finds its way onto Facebook and is frequently shared there. Wannenmacher: “Not only we as an educational organization, but also many thousands of users regularly report such intolerable content to Facebook, but satisfactory measures are usually not taken by the operator. One could almost be of the opinion that Facebook deliberately allows these posts to occur in order to generate more traffic and attention...”

Facebook doesn't respond and switches to mute

Problematic posts are often linked to false reports. For example, offensive images are published “Share this photo and Facebook will donate x euros to a charity.” This suggests to users that they can actually do good by passing on this image material. Viral effects arise that cannot be stopped by the user, but would be relatively easy for Facebook to effectively prevent. Although there is a function on Facebook for reporting content that glorifies violence and requesting its deletion, among other things, all you get is all too often the terse note: “We have checked the photo/video you reported and determined that it does not violate our community standards violates.”

Petition aims to persuade Facebook to take action

As the largest educational platform for Facebook fakes and Internet abuse in German-speaking countries, we criticize what we believe to be an unacceptable attitude on the part of Facebook. We demand active action against scenes of violence on the Internet, transparent handling of reported content and the permanent blocking of offensive photos and videos. To this end, we are collecting public declarations of support on https://www.change.org/de/Petitionen/facebook-irland-facebook-stoppe-die-verpublikung-von-violentbildern-und-videos and want to work with the media to draw attention to this explosive issue .

About the “Mimikama” association

Since 2011, the association, which is active in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, has been dedicated to raising awareness about Internet abuse with a focus on Facebook. Mimikama operates entirely without public funding. The association is supported by satisfied users with personal sponsorships and by industry in order to ensure the financing of ongoing operations.
