More than two thirds of the German population would support a stop to energy imports from Russia. This is the conclusion reached by the current “briq policy monitor” from the briq – Institute on Behavior and Inequality . In view of Russia's attack on Ukraine, a broad majority is also in favor of further measures to reduce energy dependence.
Import stop, asset freeze
According to the current survey, almost 70 percent of the 2,000 respondents are in favor of a ban on imports of gas, oil and coal from Russia. Three out of four Germans are in favor of confiscating assets from people close to Putin and thus cushioning the economic consequences of the sanctions for Germany.
In order to sustainably reduce dependence on energy imports, 90 percent are in favor of an accelerated expansion of renewable energies. For the transition, three quarters of Germans would accept an extension of the operating times of the remaining nuclear power plants, and 63 percent would accept a temporary intensification of brown coal mining.
Also majority for a speed limit
In addition, a majority of Germans would support various measures to reduce fuel consumption in road traffic: 61 percent of those surveyed believe that a speed limit of 100 km/h on German motorways, which will initially apply for six months, is justifiable. 53 percent support reintroducing car-free Sundays.
Four out of five Germans could also imagine a partial extension of the home office requirement.
