A lot will change in 2020. There are new traffic rules and also higher fines. We summarize what's new.

There are changes to road traffic not only in Germany, but in several European countries. The ADAC reports higher fines in Italy and holidaymakers in Spain should pay attention!

Spain, for example, implements a speed limit of 30 km/h in urban areas, which should generally apply to single-lane roads within towns. It is always important to look at the signs in traffic: municipalities can set a speed of 50 km/h.

The fines for speeding are sometimes tripled. The ADAC article shows that on an expressway with a speed limit of 90 km/h, a fine of 300 instead of 100 euros is due from 21 km/h. Fines are also being increased significantly in Italy, Great Britain and Scotland.

Road traffic in Germany

In February 2020, the Federal Council is scheduled to decide on amendments to the road traffic regulations. This is primarily about safety; one of the focal points will be the emergency lane . If drivers do not form an emergency lane, there has so far only been a fine and one point. The punishment should be made more severe by adding a month's driving ban.

The road traffic regulations clearly require that an emergency lane be formed when traffic is at a standstill on motorways, but also on out-of-town roads with at least two lanes in one direction, so that emergency services and the police can reach the scene of the accident unhindered. If there are two lanes of traffic, the middle of the lane must be kept clear; if there are three or more lanes, it is between the far left and the adjacent lane.

Those road users who use the emergency lane illegally for their own benefit or who attach themselves to the emergency services should also be punished.

In addition to these changes, there will also be new traffic signs, more protection for cyclists and higher fines. Bayerischer Rundfunk offers an illustrated overview of the various changes in its article “ Cars and traffic: This is what will change on the roads in 2020 ”.
