Around 4.3 billion emojis are sent on Discord every week and over 70 percent of Gen Z in Germany find virtual conversations more personal and compliments more genuine thanks to emojis.
“The Emoji Effect”
The voice, video and text communication service Discord presents “The Emoji Effect”, its first study into the peculiarities and country-specific differences of the universal language of emojis. An average of 4.3 billion emojis are used on Discord per week worldwide and the study examines what the user base, primarily Generation Z, expects from emojis. The results of communication from 16,000 emoji users around the world show that young people in particular are shaping the future of emojis. In fact, Gen Z and Millennials are convinced that emojis promote diversity and inclusion, help express personal things, deepen interpersonal relationships and ultimately improve trust and honesty in digital communication.

In Germany, Generation Z (73 percent) and Millennials (75 percent) in particular perceive virtual conversations through emojis as more personal and compliments as more genuine.
Germans speak and understand emojis
Emojis are also very popular in Germany: almost every German knows them (97 percent) and Germans use emojis most frequently in emails (62 percent) and text messages (62 percent). A large majority also believe that emojis have a positive influence on the tone of the conversation (92 percent).
Further study results for Germany are:
- Almost 7 out of 10 Germans believe that emojis bring people together (68 percent) and help them better understand other people's feelings (67 percent).
- Three quarters of German emoji users (75 percent) believe that emojis strengthen their relationships with friends, while around 7 in 10 emoji users (71 percent) think the same about their relationships with family.
- Germans use emojis most often when joking (88 percent), spreading positive news (84 percent) and flirting (72 percent).
- In Germany, 75 percent of Gen Z (18-34 years old) and Millennials (35-44 years old) each believe that emojis help to imitate personal conversations in a virtual environment.
- 73 percent of German Gen Z (18-34 years old) and 75 percent of Millennials (35-44 years old) say that they perceive a compliment with an emoji as more genuine.
“On our platform, we are seeing emojis becoming increasingly popular among our users. We therefore want to understand how people who use emojis in their communication feel and where they see the greatest potential. In Gen Z, we see a strong desire for emojis that not only best represent our emotions, but also enable deeper and more authentic connections.”

methodology
Discord surveyed 16,000 people aged 16 and over in the US, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada and Australia to find out how important emojis are for self-expression and interaction in digital communication. The survey was conducted from August 16 to September 7, 2022. Respondents were selected from those who agreed to participate in surveys conducted by The Harris Poll. Of the respondents, 9,066 were aged 16 to 25 (“Gen Z”), including from the United States (n=2,010), Australia (n=2,011), Brazil (n=2,007), Canada (n=2,010) , France (n=2,010), Germany (n=2,007), Japan (n=2,009) and the United Kingdom (n=2,010).
The sampling accuracy of Harris online polls is measured using a Bayesian credibility interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to +1.2 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and certain questions were asked to a reduced base of emoji users. This credible interval will be broader for subgroups of the surveyed population of interest.
