The British Royal College of Psychiatrists ( RC Psych ) wants to force social media companies such as Facebook and Instagram to release certain user data in order to reduce the risk of suicide among younger users.
The identity of the user should remain secret. The college, which represents 18,000 British psychiatrists, is calling on the government to take action.
“Ensure anonymity”
“It is important to know what signs there are of suicide. For example, it is possible that young people at risk of suicide search for specific pages or content that revolve around the topic. Therefore, releasing this data to research would be in the interest of the general public. Protecting lives is a higher priority than protecting data. But it really has to be guaranteed that the data remains anonymous,” says psychologist Dominik Rosenauer in an interview with pressetext.
The data that RC Psych requires for its research concerns the content that young users view on social media platforms and the time they spend on social media. The young people affected should remain anonymous. This is the only way to truly understand the risks and benefits of social media.

“Self-regulation doesn’t work”
“This data would shed light on how young people interact with social media, not just how much time they spend online,” said Bernadka Dubicka, head of the child and adolescent department at RC Psych.
There has long been a lot of discussion about the influence of social media on the risk of suicide among young people, especially in Great Britain.
The British government plans to set up a new regulator that can demand data from social media companies about the use of the platform. Dubicka sees it as important that the strictest possible measures are taken here. “Self-regulation doesn’t work. The government must hold these companies accountable,” demands the researcher.
