The claim
According to a sharepic, when the sky is cloudy, sunflowers turn to each other to share energy.
Our conclusion
Sunflowers face the sun when they grow (regardless of whether it is cloudy or not), when they are adults they always face the east - “sharing of energy” cannot take place in the plants.
Many Sharepics are motivational images, i.e. some kind of wise sayings that are accompanied by a beautiful image. The currently shared sharepic, which 2019 and is now being distributed in German with a different image, is also intended to make you think - but unfortunately with the wrong reasoning, because sunflowers turn to each other to share their energy.
The Sharepic
This sharepic has been shared on Facebook for a few weeks, mostly by esoteric pages:

In the sharepic you can see a sunflower field and the text:
“Sunflowers face the sun.
If they don't find the sun, they turn to each other and give each other energy. Imagine if we did that too.”
Where sunflowers really go
A distinction must be made here between growing and adult sunflowers : only growing ones face the sun, while adult specimens always face the east.
Growing sunflowers turn toward the sun because of their internal cycle (which doesn't matter if it's cloudy), which is based on sunlight and the sun's movement. The plant's brown "face" contains 1,000 to 2,000 tiny flowers that require the maximum amount of sunlight to grow.
Adult sunflowers only face east. They no longer need as much sunlight since they are fully grown, and the rising sun warms the flowers much more quickly. According to a UC Davis study of plants, warm flowers are preferred by bees. This gives them the advantage of being pollinated sooner at the beginning of the day than other plants.
No, sunflowers cannot share energy!
This claim comes from esotericism, because the plants absorb solar energy through their many flowers, which is then needed in the trunk for growth and supply. However, they do not emit any energy through the flowers that could be used by other sunflowers.
If it were that easy, all solar systems would be designed completely differently: in bad weather, simply align the panels with each other = constant energy. But both sunflowers and solar systems are designed to absorb , not release it .
So as nice as this comparison with sunflowers may be, in a botanical sense it is wrong!
