We are taking action against fraudulent messages about 'tax refunds' by consistently switching off the misused numbers , says Klaus Müller, President of the Federal Network Agency.

Message about alleged “tax refund”

Through complaints, the Federal Network Agency became aware that consumers were receiving short messages from various mobile phone numbers on their cell phones with information about an alleged refund from the tax office, a “tax authority,” the Federal Ministry of Finance, etc. The amount of the supposedly due “refund” was always several hundred euros.

Fake websites contained logos of well-known banks

In order to receive the “refund”, those affected should click on a link provided. The links led to websites that were designed using the logos of well-known banks and credit institutions. On these pages, the recipients of the messages should enter their bank access details in order to trigger the payment of the “refund”.

Spying on account details

In fact, there is no refund due. There is a risk that the spied-out data will be used for criminal purposes. The Federal Network Agency warns against opening links provided in such short messages or subsequently entering data.

Consumers who have already disclosed account details should urgently contact the bank that holds their account and report it to the police. Further measures can be found HERE.
