Many people find it difficult to tell whether they have a cold, flu, RS virus or coronavirus until their GP makes a diagnosis or they get certainty through a test. So what symptoms make the difference?

Common symptoms of infections caused by coronavirus, flu and RS viruses

  • Runny nose (common with Corona)
  • Headaches and body aches
  • exhaustion
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • (dry cough

RS virus also causes other symptoms such as shortness of breath, blue discoloration of the skin, lips and mucous membranes, loss of appetite and weight loss. An infection with the coronavirus can also cause nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen lymph nodes or listlessness. A loss of sense of smell and taste lasting several days is also not uncommon. – These symptoms are rare if you have the flu or cold (flu-like infection).

Often only a test can provide final certainty to determine whether it is flu, the RS virus or corona.

Transmission, incubation period and course

The coronavirus is more contagious compared to the flu. Studies have shown that a person infected with influenza infects one or two other people on average. With Corona, the reproduction number is higher at 2.8 to 3.8.

The incubation period for Corona (omicron variants) is currently around three days, while for the flu it is one to two days.
The RS virus has an incubation period of two to eight days.

Corona infections often initially have no symptoms, but the course is often more severe than that of the flu.
Patients often develop symptoms very quickly, lasting up to three days on average. The risk of infection is particularly high during this time. RSV usually begins with a runny nose and fever, although some children may later develop cough and wheezing. In babies and children up to the age of four, RSV can even lead to pneumonia; in some cases, artificial ventilation is necessary.

With Corona, possible long-term consequences .
