The “Take It Down” initiative offers quick help with the distribution of intimate images on the Internet

The distribution of intimate images without consent is unfortunately commonplace on the Internet. The reasons for publication are varied. A disappointed ex-partner is often in possession of intimate pictures and publishes them as an act of revenge. Private images were stolen and used as part of sextortion to extort money before eventually being published on the web.

It is extremely important for those affected that the images are removed quickly. Many major platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and TikTok, offer the option to report such images. However, this process can often take a long time and reporting does not prevent the recordings from being uploaded again. Those affected often spend a lot of time searching for their pictures and having them deleted.

Klicksafe, an EU initiative for more security on the Internet, has therefore launched the “Take It Down” service. The service allows platforms to automatically identify images and videos as unacceptable and publication is prevented or deleted. This means those affected can take quick and effective action against the distribution of their intimate images and are no longer dependent on the platforms' lengthy reporting processes.

The “Take It Down” initiative is aimed at different groups of people:

  • Minors who want to report unauthorized recordings of themselves published online.
  • Parents or trusted adults who want to support minors using the Service and help report unauthorized recordings.
  • Adults who, as minors, find unauthorized recordings of themselves online and want to have them removed.
  • Offers of support for adults who are or have been affected by the non-consensual publication of intimate recordings.

The “Take It Down” campaign consists of several measures. On the one hand, there is a special website where those affected can report and ask for help in removing nude images. The website also offers information and advice for those affected and their families. The website is currently only available in Spanish and English, but not much knowledge of English is necessary as the reporting process is simple.

Cooperation with large Internet companies

There is also cooperation with major Internet companies such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft to speed up the removal of nude images of minors. If those affected submit a report on the website, it will be forwarded directly to the partner companies, which will then take care of removing the images.

The “Take It Down” campaign is part of a broader initiative by Klicksafe to promote greater security online. In particular, the initiative is committed to protecting children and young people from dangers on the Internet, such as cyberbullying, online grooming and sexual abuse. Among other things, it is intended to help children and young people be safer online and be able to move free from threats and dangers.

Safe to use: files are not shared

“Take It Down” is a service of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the USA. The service combats sexual violence against children and works with law enforcement agencies worldwide. No images or videos are uploaded to use the service. Instead, a hash value is created for each recording, which acts as a digital fingerprint of the file. The hash values are transmitted to the service and stored in a list. All files remain on your own device and are not shared.
