On Wednesday, May 25th, the scene was filmed with a cell phone and the video spread rapidly on social media: In the 30-second video, several men can be seen fighting on the street. One of the men appears to be unconscious and is dragged aside by his feet before four men get into two cars and drive away quickly.

The Vienna police were also informed about the video and investigated. It turned out that a lot had already happened before the video was shot.

Verbal argument and a baton

According to the Vienna police, one of the taxi drivers, a 48-year-old man, had previously asked the driver of a Ukrainian vehicle to clear the taxi stand. After the driver drove away from the square, there was said to be an insulting verbal argument between him, another 49-year-old taxi driver and the presumably Ukrainian men.

The 48-year-old taxi driver and his 49-year-old colleague reported to the police that they were physically attacked by the four men during the argument before they fled in two vehicles, which can also be seen in the video.

However, an independent witness statement sheds more light on the dispute. Accordingly, the 49-year-old taxi driver is said to have taken a baton from his vehicle, opened the passenger door of one of the Ukrainian vehicles and tried to attack the passenger with it. However, the passenger is said to have defended himself in time, which is where the scenes went viral on the internet.

As a result, the police are now investigating all the people involved for involvement in a brawl in accordance with Section 91 of the Austrian Penal Code (racketeering = physical participation in a fight). The identities of the suspected taxi drivers and a 27-year-old Ukrainian have been identified so far. There are clues about the other suspects, but their identities are still under investigation.

The two taxi drivers suffered minor to moderate injuries. A political motive for the fight can currently be ruled out.
