The telephone fraudster contacted the older man from Groß-Umstadt around 12:30 p.m. and posed as a bank employee. Apparently problems were found with the man's online banking, meaning that it would have to be reactivated. The information provided by the alleged bank employee seemed credible to the person being called, so he passed on the generated security codes to him. The criminal later used the code to make a fraudulent transfer of almost 5,000 euros.

Telephone scammers: The police warn!

Against this background, the police warn again and give the following advice:

    • If you don't know the name of the alleged bank employee, end the conversation immediately and first check whether he or she really exists. To do this, contact the person you trust at your bank using the usual number.
    • Real bank employees will not ask or demand your personal identification number (PIN), EC card number or transaction number (TAN) on the phone. Never give out such sensitive information over the phone.
    • Don't let yourself be put under pressure! End the conversation as soon as something seems suspicious. You can also enlist the help of neighbors, people you trust, or the police. This way you can quickly find out whether you are a scammer.
