The fraudster maintained contact with the 61-year-old victim for several weeks since mid-January. He posed as “Mr. Prince” from a well-known and actually existing crypto exchange and told the person he called that he had made a profit of 200,000 euros by investing in cryptocurrency. This profit can then be paid out after paying a fee of 10%.

During the subsequent phone calls, the fraudulent caller finally used software to access the victim's PC. According to the current state of knowledge, “Mr. Prince” logged in every time on the website of the crypto exchange he named. As a result, there were several transfers to different accounts - the injured party gave the alleged employee of the crypto exchange his corresponding TAN number.
Over time, amounts of money were also transferred from the “company” to the injured party’s account. As a result of the process described, the person called was ultimately damaged by the amount of 45,000 euros. When he was ultimately unable to trace the supposed employee of the actually existing crypto exchange, he filed a fraud report at a police station on February 14, 2023.
The responsible criminal commissioner 24 has taken over the further investigation into the case.
The police advise:
- As a general rule, do not allow anyone you do not know to access your PC!
- Under no circumstances should you reveal any data about your personal online banking area!
- If in doubt, contact your respective contact person or get your police involved!
