The consumption of Western TV in the former GDR had a positive influence on attitudes towards foreigners and mitigated xenophobic tendencies. Trier and Bremen come to this conclusion in their current data analysis.

More donations, more openness

According to the scientists, the more positive attitude towards strangers was reflected, for example, in the fact that people with access to Western television donated more often to aid refugees. In addition, people in regions covered by Western television were less likely to vote for right-wing parties that predominantly promote xenophobic attitudes in national elections from 1990 to 2017.

“In regions with western television reception, fewer xenophobic actions occurred. These effects are still visible 28 years after reunification,” the experts write. The differences between regions with and without Western TV, on the other hand, could not be explained by economic circumstances, differences between urban and non-urban regions or, for example, by a “right-wing tradition”.

Data from 1990 evaluated

The experts evaluated the “Youth and Right-Wing Extremism 1990” survey conducted by the Central Institute for Youth Research before German reunification with some questions about attitudes towards foreigners. They also used data from the socio-economic panel for their study.

There was also significantly more foreign content on western television than on eastern television. Exposure to this international program content appeared to reduce xenophobia. It could therefore be an advantage to broadcast foreign programs in their original form and only synchronized instead of redesigning them according to your own standards.
