As a rule, drones are only known as unusual toys for aerial photography. But now we are working on a real benefit.
Although we don't want to say that aerial photography can't be useful (for example in the search for missing people), drones may be able to save human lives a little more directly, which the University of Greifswald wants to test .
In the event of a cardiac arrest, things have to be done quickly: if a first aider uses a so-called defibrillator, it can save a life. This device can use electrical impulses to restart the heart. It is therefore also called a shock generator. Such defibrillators are installed in many public facilities such as libraries or city administrations, and often also in fire departments or savings banks. But in rural areas the distance is often far too great, and some devices can only be reached during business hours.

According to the ideas of Greifswald University Medicine, drones, i.e. unmanned aircraft, could help here in the future: These should fly the defibrillator to the first responder in the shortest possible time. Whether this really works and what needs to be organized and how is now being tested in initial tests. The project leaders are Prof. Klaus Hahnenkamp, Director of the Clinic for Anesthesiology at the University Medical Center Greifswald, and Dr. Mina Hinsch. The feasibility study, which will last around six months, is supported by the Federal Ministry of Health with just over 400,000 euros.
The university medicine is now looking for volunteers in the Penkun area in the Uckermark and in Greifswald who will act as first aiders in the simulation in order to carry out the rescue from the landing of the drone to the resuscitation on the training dummy.
“These people should be around 60 years old and be able to work on their knees,” explains Hinsch. Anyone interested can contact us by email at mvlifedrone@med.uni-greifswald.de or by phone: 03834 – 86 80399. Questions about the project can also be asked there.
