Vaccine damage: Since the start of the vaccination campaign, around 20 million doses of the approved Covid vaccines have been administered in Austria. The applications for compensation under the Vaccine Damage Act are “in the per mille range,” explains Katharina Reich, Director General of Public Health, in the Ö1 Morning Journal of December 30th. There are exactly 1,619 applications. “In 50 cases, the vaccine damage was recognized.” According to Ö1, 38 of these 50 cases received one-off compensation of 2,000 euros. However, there is a monthly pension for twelve people.
These are, for example, patients who have a permanent limitation in performance due to inflammation of the myocardium, such as existing heart damage. And these are patients who have suffered nerve damage or impaired walking due to a thrombosis.

Decision about vaccine damage
How is the decision made as to whether there is vaccination damage in a specific case? For this purpose, medical reports are necessary in advance. The doctors follow a “clear grid” that the doctors have to fill out, for example with regard to symptoms. In a second step, medical experts assess: Are the test results already sufficient to diagnose vaccination damage or do further findings need to be obtained?
Vaccine damage goes beyond normal vaccination reactions, such as a mild fever. These are regulated in the Vaccine Damage Act of 1973, which was last adjusted in December 2022 (Section 8o, concerns one-off payments and cost-of-living adjustments). The forms for submitting an application can be found on the Ministry of Social Affairs , as well as the information: Who is entitled? What services are there? When is compensation paid out?
According to Katharina Reich, the process is very simple: “You don’t need proof, just probability is enough. The medical damage that is clearly attributable to the vaccination does not have to be proven in black and white.” There are many more cases where a so-called exclusion diagnosis is made. “There is simply nothing left other than that it was probably the vaccination.” These cases are also recognized according to the Vaccine Damage Act. Complaints to the Federal Administrative Court regarding the rejection of an application for vaccine damage have so far been made eleven times. “Three cases were rejected, eight are still open,” reported Ö1.

Difference between vaccination reactions and vaccination injuries
Rudolf Schmitzberger, head of the vaccination department at the Medical Association, states that the terms must be clearly differentiated, as with a “real flu” and a flu-like infection. “In principle, a distinction must be made between vaccination reactions and desired drug effects.” Vaccination reactions are usually harmless and represent the immune system’s reaction to the vaccine. Vaccine damage, on the other hand, is an “unforeseeable, serious side effect of the vaccination.” The numbers are plausible with regard to neighboring Germany.
In order to be able to classify the number of vaccine injuries, Schmitzberger made a comparison with the Austrian vaccination plan : Between 2011 and 2020, 8.5 million vaccinations were administered in the free vaccination program for children and 11 vaccine injuries were recognized in the same period, some of which were due to vaccinations Go back in 2011. According to the head of the vaccination department, reactions were always very quick, as was the case with myocarditis in young men.
After all the billions of vaccinations that have been administered, we know that vaccinations always reduce risk. And we still know, even when the pandemic is over, that the serious complications arise from the Covid disease and not from the vaccination.
