The photos of this town hall figure have been going viral since 2019, when the Twitter account “ Whores of Yore ,” which deals with the more farcical aspects of the story, shared them. Since there are also dubious history accounts on Twitter that, for example, show an alleged photo of the Titanic , even though it is a photo of the Queen Mary 22 years later (yes, that was a micro-fact check), we keep getting inquiries as to whether this town hall figure is real and what is behind it.
This tweet with the photos is:
The description says that the statue is on the wall of Cologne City Hall, hidden beneath a larger statue of Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden. It dates back to 1410, but no one really knows why it is there.
Conjecture and a common explanation
The figure is placed directly below the portrait of Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden (approx. 1205-1261), which leads many to assume that the archbishop was not particularly chaste and that with this stature he was practicing autofellatio (yes, That's what it's called, but you have to be very flexible to do it).
But that is not the case, because the archbishop only stands there after the Cologne town hall tower was rebuilt after its destruction in the Second World War. And the agile man has only been found there for a few decades and is a copy of a figure from around 1410 that is kept inside the tower.
The solution to the mystery of why the statue was made in the first place: It is a publicly displayed protest against the authorities. This was a popular motif in the Middle Ages, explains the former city curator Ulrich Krings:
“It was about basically holding up the authorities’ ass. Rough, exposed sexuality was intended to show that you didn't care about the authorities' ideas of morality or order.”
The former cathedral builder Barbara Schock-Werner confirms that it is simply a funny provocation that should not be overinterpreted, and Walter Geis from the Cologne Monument Protection Office adds that such provocative figures usually allude to the seven deadly sins, in this case to lust (no , that's not the joy of knitting, that would be the joy of knitting with three l).
