Ibuprofen for COVID-19 – Is it dangerous or not?
On the one hand, a warning about ibuprofen was fake, but on the other hand, even the WHO now advises against it.
However, the WHO warning is not based on clear research, but is a precautionary measure.
If in doubt, you should avoid ibuprofen for COVID-19 until there are more detailed studies.

French Health Minister Olivier Véran pointed on Twitter , and now WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier also advised on Tuesday in Geneva that people who suspect an infection with the new coronavirus should not take ibuprofen without medical advice .
So everything seems clear, right?
Not quite, because you should also read through the respective articles, because then you will see that it is far more complex than a headline alone makes it seem.
Where does the knowledge about the dangers of ibuprofen come from?
The reason is an article in the specialist journal “ The Lancet ” from March 11th. 2020. In that article, doctors point out that drugs that inhibit the cell receptor ACE could potentially worsen the course of Covid-19.
Specifically, it is about the disease progression of 32 patients in China with elevated blood pressure and diabetes mellitus who took medications that inhibit the cell receptor ACE.
Attention, hypothesis!
Doctors hypothesized that treating such patients with thiazolidinediones and ibuprofen may increase the progression of the disease.
We are therefore initially only dealing with a hypothesis, which is clearly pointed out in the specialist magazine and that more research is needed to confirm or refute that hypothesis.
Possible clues
Tagesschau fact finder , virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) can certainly imagine that aspirin and ibuprofen could not be helpful in the lung disease COVID-19, since ibuprofen inhibits blood clotting and therefore the risk of internal bleeding increases.
Further investigations necessary
However, apart from the hypothesis mentioned above, there is still no evidence that ibuprofen is dangerous in COVID-19 patients. Virologist Christian Drosten emphasizes in the podcast on NDR Info that although SARS-CoV-2 is new, coronaviruses have been known for a long time. So far there have never been any problems with taking ibuprofen if you have had a coronavirus infection.

If in doubt, avoid ibuprofen
The WHO is therefore playing it safe : Since there is still no clear clarity, but there are small indications, they also advise against using ibuprofen as a precaution unless you have consulted your family doctor.
