But now the Greens have put a drastic end to the annual descent into the valley, a politician claims on Facebook: “Greens ban the cattle drive, ” says one post. He further writes that the centuries-old custom is a thorn in the side of the green animal rights activists, as the journey of several hours from the mountain pasture would supposedly overexert the animals. Furthermore, farmers are currently being put under pressure with hate letters and shitstorms. The politician suspects that the Greens' main motive is the fight against cultural identity in the Alpine region. But to what extent is the party actually an opponent of tradition?

The Greens do not want to ban cattle driving
In fact, the party has not yet banned the cattle drive and has no plans to do so in the future. Instead, at the request of the German Press Agency (dpa), the Greens wrote:
“Cattle that have had at least three months of full-day grazing in mountainous terrain at the time of herding usually have a sufficient level of fitness to be able to cover longer distances at a slow walking pace without damage. In our view, there is therefore no reason to restrict the cattle drive.” The Greens also say: “There are no efforts on the part of the party to abolish the cattle drive.”
More and more cows are being transported to the valley
the Maierhöfen pasture cooperative did not bring around 250 of its cows down the mountain from the mountain pasture, but by truck. The community of Obermaiselstein is also foregoing festive activities this year for various reasons. For example, traffic is hindered by large crowds, which in turn increases the risk of accidents. Nowadays, farmers also have to constantly justify themselves when driving and loading livestock, as Michael Honisch, the managing director of the Alpine Association in the Allgäu, reports.
Individual animal rights activists express criticism of the cattle drive - but it is not expected to end for the time being
In contrast to Holger Arppe's claim that the Greens are striving to ban the descent into the alpine pastures, there have long been isolated animal rights activists who have been criticizing and threatening farmers because the annual descent into the valley is animal cruelty. Some farmers even report anonymous death threats if they do not stop the cattle drive. This eco-terror is also a reason why many farmers now bring the animals to the mountain pastures by truck and back again instead of – in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way – on foot.
In addition, Corona was “definitely the deciding factor” for the Maierhöfer Viehscheid club boss Thomas Holzer not to celebrate the Alpfahrt as big as in recent years. “Some of them don’t have the staff to make such a long journey through the Alps possible.”
However, the managing director of Allgäu GmbH, Bernhard Joachim, sees no end to the ancient custom for the time being, most likely because it has only developed into a major tourist attraction in recent years and is still being widely advertised in most regions this year is celebrated.
