They spread uncontrollably in our news feeds and often go uncommented. But what does it mean for our society and our individual understanding of the world if this misinformation goes uncommented? We would like to explore this question using two fictitious examples.

The hidden power of fake news

Fake news is intentionally misleading or false information injected into news channels. They spread primarily via social media, where they often go uncommented and thus give the appearance of credibility. They aim to shape and manipulate opinions, often with the aim of deepening social divisions or promoting political agendas.

The Reality of Fake News: Two Fictional Examples

To better understand the impact of uncommented fake news, let's take a look at two fictional examples.

Example 1: Fake news and health

Imagine a fake news story pops up saying that drinking water with special vitamins boosts your immune system to protect you from any type of virus, including COVID-19. The news spreads across our news feeds, without comment, and many people begin to believe it.

The effects could be devastating. People may stop following necessary health measures such as wearing masks or social distancing, believing that their “vitamin water” will protect them. This could lead to a surge in COVID-19 cases, which could overwhelm the healthcare system and cost many lives.

Example 2: Fake news and politics

Suppose a false news story spreads claiming that a politician from a particular party is involved in corruption. The fake news is shared hundreds of thousands of times and goes uncommented.

This news could cause voters to lose trust in the politician concerned and his party. They could be tricked into changing their political orientation based on information that is not true. In the worst case, this could lead to political instability and undermine trust in democratic processes.

The role of media and education in the fight against fake news

In a world where fake news is a real problem, the role of the media and the education system is crucial. Media organizations must take responsibility for correcting fake news and providing clear and accurate information to the public.

At the same time, the education system must promote media literacy so that citizens develop the ability to critically question information and recognize fake news.

Conclusion: The uncommented spread of fake news in our news feeds is a threatening phenomenon that can have serious consequences. It is the responsibility of all of us – the media, the education system and individual citizens – to be vigilant and take action to curb the spread of misinformation. This is the only way we can maintain the integrity of our information landscape and strengthen social cohesion.
