Beware of skimming: the hum of an ATM, the inconspicuous green light source, the whisper of the keys under your fingertips. This scene, so common and yet so important, recently took a sinister turn on Hindenburgstrasse. An attentive customer noticed that his debit card could not be inserted into the machine properly. What started as a simple inconvenience turned into a dangerous tale of fraud. This is about skimming - a method that criminals use to spy on access and card data from unsuspecting bank customers. This incident, although without financial damage, serves as an alarming reminder of the need to carefully protect our banking information.

What is skimming?

The word 'skimming' sounds harmless, almost like a term from a cookbook. But unfortunately it is far from that. 'Skimming' is a method in which fraudsters attach special devices to ATMs to read customers' personal and financial information. This can include duplicating card information, spying on the PIN through hidden cameras, and more.

The incident on Hindenburgstrasse

On Thursday, July 27th around 9:15 a.m., a customer at an ATM on Hindenburgstrasse noticed that something was wrong. His debit card could not be inserted properly. A bank employee who was called also noticed that something was wrong with the ATM. The criminal police were called in and upon closer inspection discovered that covert technical devices had actually been installed to read out the card data. Fortunately, in this case there was no financial damage. But this only underlines the danger posed by such criminal activities.

The police warning

Following the incident, police have issued important information and warnings to protect against such skimming cases. The police emphasize that we should handle our payment cards carefully and always keep the PIN separate from the card. Here are some other police recommendations:

  • Make sure that when you enter your PIN, others cannot observe it.
  • Make sure you keep a sufficient safe distance from the next customer.
  • While entering the PIN, cover the keypad with your other hand or an object (e.g. wallet, piece of paper) as a privacy screen.
  • Do not use an ATM where something seems unusual, e.g. B. attached strips or panels, protruding and loose parts, traces of glue around the card slot.

Conclusion: ATM skimming is a frightening reality of our digital world. But as the Hindenburgstrasse incident showed, we can protect ourselves by staying vigilant and informed. Remember to keep your PIN separate from your card and be aware of anomalies at ATMs before using them. Let us take this opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting our personal and financial information. In a world that is increasingly connected, it is essential that we are aware of the risks and take appropriate measures to protect ourselves and our hard-earned savings.
