Have you ever made fun of the Japanese L?

After the very exciting World Cup round of 16 match between Japan and Belgium yesterday, there were a lot of small expressions of sympathy for Japan on Facebook that played with the L/R cliché of the Japanese. But can the Japanese really not pronounce R?

Maybe this little sound file from Mimikama employee Ralf will surprise you, because Japanese people can definitely pronounce an R, even if there is no R in Japanese. That should sound like Ralf describes it.

Update and little information in advance:

There were various comments on the explanation in the statement.
These are indeed justified, because it is true that there is a sound in Japanese that is at least very similar to R, as many of our readers have already described correctly. It is also true that the L in Japanese is replaced by an R sound. So basically R and L are almost the same letters and sound like them when you say them.
In this respect, the short explanation in the article is actually a little misleading, we apologize for that.

By the way: The only people who REALLY can't pronounce R are probably the people from East Westphalia^^. The East Westphalian R is almost silent in many language cases; as soon as it is preceded by a vowel or umlaut, an R is usually not spoken, but an E or A is sounded.

Example: An East Westphalian does not say Berg, but Beag. He has no fear, but is afraid. He also doesn't like beer or Korn, preferring Biee and Koan. Eahlich! And an East Westphalian doesn't differentiate between E and Ä.
