This video shows people taking the steps up a stairwell. If they disappear behind the wall to go further up, they suddenly come back up from below - how does that work!?

Wow! This video is really impressive! The “Escherian Stairwell” or simply the “magic staircase” actually raises many questions. Said to have been built in 1968, it is still said to amaze architecture students today. This video is about:

The fact check

It is actually a film student's final project : a Kickstarter project called "The Stairwell Project: Building a Modern Myth" that Michael Lacanilao launched in 2013. The project did not reach its goal of €12,000.

“So what we're doing with this project is building a myth about my school, the Rochester Institute of Technology. The myth is that located somewhere in this campus is this architectural marvel called the Escherian Stairwell.”

“With this project we want to create a myth about my school, the Rochester Institute of Technology. The myth is that somewhere on this campus there is an architectural marvel, the Escherian Staircase.” [*Editor’s translation]

There are countless tips and tricks that you can use in the film. Through various camera and post-production techniques we can now admire the “magic staircase”.

Captain Disillusion shows exactly how this works in his debunking video from 2018:
