Various media are currently reporting on a dog that was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
Some media are reporting that a dog has contracted the novel coronavirus.
However, this is not correct, the virus was only discovered on the dog's snout and throat.
However, the dog is not sick and there is no evidence that pets can become ill with SARS-CoV-2.
For example, the website “ Wunderweib ” and “ BILD ” report in rather brief articles that the dog of a patient infected with the novel coronavirus tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and has now also been quarantined. But at least “BILD” mentioned an important point that we will get to in a moment: compromises were made!

Do I have to worry about my dog now?
First of all: The article by “Wunderweib” in particular is intended to create fear, as it writes that the WHO’s “opinion” that dogs and cats cannot become infected has now been refuted. However, the WHO does not work with opinions, but with current facts , and according to them there is still not a single piece of evidence that dogs can become infected.
But they report that the dog is sick!
And that brings us to the next error in the article: The dog is not sick , he just tested positive , that's a big difference!
Why should that be a big difference?
If the dog becomes ill, it would mean it has COVID-19, the name of the disease caused by the new coronavirus. He would therefore also have corresponding symptoms of illness.
However, he only tested positive, and there is now an important detail: swabs taken and the dog tested “ weakly positive ”.
What does “weakly positive” mean?
The swabs were taken from the dog's nasal and oral cavities as well as the rectum. SARS-CoV-2 viruses were actually found on the snout and throat, but not in the rectum.
And now the prize question: How could viruses have gotten into the snout and throat of a dog that lives in a household with a SARS-CoV-2 infected person? That's right: they sniff and lick anything that's interesting in any way!

Why caution is still advised
It cannot be repeated often enough: washing your hands is important! Also after cuddling the dog to prevent becoming infected with E.coli bacteria or salmonella.
There is currently no evidence that dogs become ill with SARS-CoV-2, but it is hypothetically possible that a person could become infected if they play with a dog that belongs to an infected person. As I said: hypothetical!
But you don't have to worry about your pet actually becoming infected at the moment, because the weakly positive test is not real proof that the virus jumps back and forth between humans and animals and makes pets sick.
