A small excerpt from a newspaper apparently causes a lot of excitement: an excursion offer that is essentially only aimed at children of asylum seekers.

There it starts now, the excitement among posts with the picture: “ Typical, they get everything shoved in the A… ”, “ And what about OUR children??? ", " Just boycott everything!! " and so forth. This small excerpt is:

Offers for school students and young adults
During the autumn holidays we offer a free excursion program, primarily for children of asylum seekers. But German children can also take part if there are still places available.

The complete picture is important

In order to understand what it's all about, you have to look at a picture as a whole. Let's do that now and take a few steps back:

The above image was shared in its entirety in 2015 , when it was still current. But since no one would be upset about a three-year-old newspaper clipping, the image is now being shared without the dates. This gives the impression that it is an offer this fall.

We already asked the AWO, which published this offer, in 2015.

What does this actually say about this image?

Statement from AWO Schleswig-Holstein on the holiday program for children

A photo of event information for school students and young adults has been published on the social network Facebook.

The AWO local association's offers listed are part of a special language support project for refugee children.

These trips are in addition to the usual free fall holiday program for local children. The aim of the project “Learn German through play and discovery” is to acquire the language and get to know the surrounding area.

Since there are more places available for the excursions than are needed for the project, it was decided to open the events in the spirit of integration and thus promote the exchange of children from different cultures.

“We regret that the description of the event was misunderstood due to unfortunate wording,” emphasized Michael Selck, managing director of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Landesverband Schleswig-Holstein e. V. “Our volunteers and full-time employees help where support is needed – regardless of origin, religion, gender or nationality.”

Conclusion

In addition to the usual offers, this AWO offer from 2015 was aimed at children of refugees. So no German child was taken away from their excursion spot!
