A patent that is even publicly available is causing a lot of excitement.

The most important thing about the patent for the coronavirus in brief:

  1. There are several patents on a coronavirus on Google Patent
  2. However, there is not THE coronavirus, it is a whole family of viruses
  3. The patents relate to weakened forms of the viruses that can be used for vaccinations

Various relevant sites believe that they have discovered a scandal, and in fact it initially appears: The coronavirus, which is currently rampant in China and is also spreading internationally, has a patent number that is even publicly visible .

The general conclusion

At this point, the knowledge stops on the sites that spread that the coronavirus was produced in laboratories years ago and has now essentially broken out, meaning that it is an intentional, potential pandemic; Wild conspiracy theories are being spread.

Because their conclusion is: It's a patent, so someone invented it and patented it. End of conclusion.

Fact 1: There is no THE coronavirus

Coronaviruses are a whole family of viruses that have the ability to infect both humans and animals. They cause pneumonia and kidney failure and can even lead to death.

The best-known coronaviruses that can be transmitted from person to person are MERS and SARS .

Fact 2: Patents are important for potential vaccines

If you take a closer look at the patent, you can see that a weakened version of a coronavirus was patented:

“A live, attenuated coronavirus comprising a polyprotein-encoding replicase gene variant comprising a mutation in nsp-14, the replicase gene variant encoding a protein corresponding to an amino acid mutation from Val to Leu at position 393 of SEQ ID NO: 7 Position includes.”

And it is precisely such weakened viruses that are used in vaccinations to “train” the immune system to deal with these types of viruses so that it can take action against such viruses in an emergency. This is also evident from the patent:

By the way, if you search diligently, you will find many more patents with the name “coronavirus”, as there are many variants of the virus and a patent has been registered for every weakened form of the virus that can serve as the basis for a vaccine.

For laboratories, the hunt for such patents is an important source of income: If a laboratory develops a weakened version of a virus and files a patent on it, it can sell these viruses to other laboratories that are developing vaccines against the virus.

Fact 3: There is still no vaccination for the new coronavirus

The coronavirus now discovered in China is called 2019-nCoV . It was first discovered in Wuhan, China. Initially, many patients reported that they were shopping at a large fish and seafood market, which is why it was suspected that the spread was only from animal to person.

However, a growing number of patients reported that they did not eat seafood from this market, which is why it is currently assumed that there is a person-to-person spread, possibly through respiratory droplets. How exactly and how effectively the newly discovered coronavirus spreads is also unclear at this point.

But that is exactly why there is no vaccination yet, even if some people suspect this for the reasons mentioned above: Many laboratories are working hard to develop a weakened version of the virus that is suitable for vaccinations. Because of the seriousness of the possibility of illness, this version must be neither too weak (otherwise no vaccination will help) nor too strong (otherwise the vaccinated people will get sick).

Conclusion

The claim that the coronavirus was developed in a laboratory because a patent was discovered on Google is based on sheer ignorance and false conclusions.

There is not just one coronavirus, but an entire family of viruses. Vaccinations against this new coronavirus are still in development, and the patents on other, weaker forms of coronaviruses do not apply to the new version.
