What happens now?
As it turns out, there is a pretty strict system in place. There are many different plans for the death of Queen Elizabeth II, codenamed Operation London Bridge.
“D-Day” begins within minutes of the Queen’s death
Following the Queen's death, the Prime Minister and a number of senior ministers and officials are informed via a "cascade of calls". The day is referred to internally as " D-Day ", and each subsequent day until the funeral is referred to as "D+1 ", " D+2 ", etc.
The royal family will then issue an official announcement to inform the public. The United Kingdom Parliament and the devolved parliaments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are prorogued. An announcement will first go out to the global news agency Press Association and simultaneously to the rest of the world's media.
“London Bridge is down”: What do these words actually mean?
It is these four words that will bring an entire country to a standstill: “London Bridge is down.” With this sentence, which in German means something like “The London Bridge has collapsed,” a high-ranking official will one day inform the British Prime Minister that that Queen Elizabeth II is dead.
A radio warning system, commonly known as “Rats,” is activated. The news is broadcast first across the main television channels, with all BBC programs pausing to show the BBC One broadcast. News anchors are expected to wear black suits and ties, which they keep on standby at all times.
Prince Charles will become the new king...
and addressed the nation at 6 p.m. sharp on the evening of her death. If Charles keeps his name, he will be known as King Charles III. be known. The Queen's death will be followed by a 12-day mourning period, during which her body will be returned to Buckingham Palace.
The current list of heirs to the British throne behind Queen Elizabeth II:
- Charles, Prince of Wales, eldest son of Elizabeth II.
- William, Duke of Cambridge, eldest son of Prince Charles
- George, eldest child and first son of William
- Charlotte, William's second eldest child and first daughter
- Louis, youngest child and second son of William
- Henry “Harry”, Duke of Sussex, youngest son of Prince Charles
- Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, son of Henry
- Lilibet “Lili” Diana, daughter of Henry
- Andrew, Duke of York, second son of Elizabeth II.
- Beatrice, eldest daughter of Andrew
The Queen's funeral takes place 10 days after her death...
...and is expected to be held at Westminster Abbey. Gun salutes will be fired at all funeral stations and a national minute's silence will be observed. On the day of the funeral itself, the London Stock Exchange and most British banks will remain closed.
Her body will be buried in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where both the Queen Mother and King George VI will be buried. are buried. The Queen's funeral and Charles' coronation become national holidays.
