In our modern, increasingly digitalized world, the Internet is like a huge virtual living room. Everyone has a voice and can express themselves freely – for everyone to hear. But if you listen carefully, you will notice that there are also many unpleasant and aggressive people. Digital communication is often characterized by unfriendliness and intolerance. More and more voices seem to be emerging in their online behavior through criticism, nagging and negative comments. But why is it like that? Who are these people and how can we respond appropriately to them?
Why are so many people mean on the internet?
The internet is like a big mask. We can hide under the protection of anonymity. Nobody has to know our name or our face. This feeling of anonymity gives many people a certain freedom to express themselves in ways that they would never dare to do in real life. They make harsh comments without fear of direct consequences.
Another aspect is the diversity of opinions that we encounter on the Internet. In real life, we often interact with people who think similarly to us. Online we meet people from all over the world with a wide variety of views. This can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings.
Who are the “trolls”?
Anyone who constantly complains, complains and tries to provoke or annoy other users is called a “troll” on the Internet. These can be children and young people who want to have fun, or adults who want to vent their frustration or make fun of others.
Trolls are looking for attention. They express extreme opinions and provoke in order to provoke reactions. They enjoy it when other users get upset or annoyed with them.
The infection with the complaining mood
The spread of unkindness and intolerance online is like an epidemic. They spread a “virus” – the virus of negativity. This creates an atmosphere in which nagging and negative comments become the norm.
How do we deal with the trolls?
Despite the challenge, we should try to be understanding of trolls. Often it is people who have difficulties in real life and take out their frustration on the internet. They need our compassion and understanding, not our counter-aggression.
We can try to communicate with trolls and make it clear to them that their behavior towards others is inappropriate. However, sometimes it is better to ignore them. If they don't get a response, they may lose interest and find a new "hobby."
We can make the internet friendlier
The Internet has become an integral part of our lives. It should be a place where respect and kindness reign. Each of us can help make the internet a friendlier place. We can stop getting upset with others, we can try to understand people with different opinions, and we can always remain polite and kind, no matter what. If we can do this, the Internet will be a more pleasant place for everyone.
