My daughter and I share a passion: horror films.
That's why I always show her the "classics" of the genre, which she was too young for back then. These include works such as “Hellraiser”, “[REC]”, “Thir13en Ghosts” and also the Japanese horror film “The Ring”, in which the ghost of Sadako Yamamura (in the US remake Samara Morgan) appears after watching a video. crawls out of the television after seven days. Pure fiction, right? But why do you see a cat coming out of a television in this photo?
The Ring Cat
There are countless sharepics and memes circulating about horror films, whether they are generally known or more familiar to connoisseurs. It is unknown how many horror film fans also like unusual photos of cats, but this photo was shared more than average:
A cat actually seems to crawl out of the television: only the front half of the body and the front legs are visible, the rest seems to be in the dimension behind the screen. So no wonder my daughter had to show me the photo!
Unfortunately, my daughter provoked me, a Mimikama fact checker, into accepting this photo as an official request. Challenge accepted, Mini-Me!!
A closer look at the photo
Of course, no one really believes that a cat is crawling out of the television (I hope so). The first explanation that comes to almost everyone's mind is a strange posture... which wouldn't be surprising, after all, cats seem to be really fluid and capable of all sorts of contortions.
Let's take a closer look at the photo: With increased brightness and contrast, it is clearly visible that the reflected body is longer than the visible body "outside" the screen and appears to bend. In addition, her tail can already be seen.

But what about their hind legs? Is she really standing so perfectly that her back legs are hidden by her front legs?
Luckily, we also found on Reddit , but in a better resolution. Since Facebook lowers the resolution of images, a certain detail is hardly visible there, but in the Reddit version it is:

The cat's front legs, in contrast to the rest of the fur, look strangely pixelated with a sharp demarcation from the background.
If we now enlarge the detail and increase the contrast, we can also see what really happened there:

The cat's hind legs, which are probably white, were simply brushed over with black in a graphics program, but quite messily, as the messy, pixelated edge of the white front legs is very clearly visible when enlarged.
Forensic analysis of the photo using various methods also repeatedly showed that the image was manipulated in the area of the front legs:

Conclusion
So unfortunately it's not a photo taken at exactly the right moment in which it looks as if the cat is coming out of the television, but rather a cat that is hunched over in front of the television and whose hind legs have been painted black with a graphics program so that they are almost invisible .
Of course, I then proudly presented the results of our quickly developed analysis to my daughter, and she then thanked me very eloquently and in detail:

You're welcome! 🙂
At this point we would also like to say a big thank you to our community on Facebook who contributed to this fact check .

– No, 29 scientists were not killed by 4 robots in Japan!
