Spies in the children's room: The children's room is becoming more and more digital. So-called smart toys or intelligent toys can, when used correctly, enrich children's play world. But especially with connected children's toys, you should pay close attention to who can access the toy and what data is automatically recorded.

Use smart toys safely

Networked toys, also called smart toys, are devices with an Internet or Bluetooth connection, or GPS function. They are characterized by the fact that they can recognize the surroundings and respond to voice commands - integrated sensors, cameras or microphones used for this. They can also interact with people and other digital devices. There are intelligent toys with (networked) and without an internet connection required for use (can also be used offline; however, a connection to the internet may be established from time to time in order to import updates. This means that these devices are also sometimes internet-capable).

Smart toys include:

  • App-controlled robots, talking dolls or networked cuddly toys,
  • Toy cars etc. with camera,
  • Smart watches for children,
  • Or toys with voice assistant systems (children can easily listen to music and read books using voice commands. The problem is that this voice control can also direct children to unsuitable content or to paid offers.)

Spies in the children's room: Dangers of networked toys

But even though this type of toy is exciting and can enrich play and learning, smart toys can also become spies in the children's room. Many of these toys have an unsecured Bluetooth connection . This allows conversations to be recorded, locations and habits to be recorded and, in some cases, images to be collected. This data can be used doxing

What to consider when buying connected toys

Particularly against the background of data storage or misuse and the invasion of the child's privacy, the responsibility for the safe use of networked toys lies primarily with the parents. Before using it for the first time, be sure to read the device's instructions for use and the data protection information.

  • Does the toy have a wireless camera or microphone?
  • Are image or audio files transmitted wirelessly to the manufacturer? Then the person being admitted must have full control over this!
  • Can the microphone or camera be secretly accessed externally? Then the device is prohibited!
  • In the worst case, security gaps in the software of smart toys could allow attackers to take control of the toy and, for example, listen to the environment and make contact with the child.

5 tips from the BSI for the safe use of smart toys

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommends paying attention to the following points when using smart toys:

  • Secure – assign a new, individual password before using the smart toy.
  • Minimize – Ask yourself if you really need to have all of the preset features turned on.
  • Update – Install the latest updates regularly.
  • Give advice – Explain the benefits and risks of the smart toy to the child early on.
  • Testing – Test the Smart Toy before use and always turn it off after playing.

The Consumer Protection Center further information on the risks and possible security gaps of smart toys . The Federal Network Agency also urges caution when buying smart toys .
