A video is going viral and tempers are running high: 100 tenants in North Rhine-Westphalia are to lose their apartments so that refugees can move in. A serious accusation that leads to heated discussions. But it stands up to scrutiny - what's the deal with this termination?
The Tiktok clip: A look at the facts
A popular medium, a polarizing topic. A video on Tiktok claims that 100 tenants in North Rhine-Westphalia were evicted from their apartments. The goal? A block of flats that will soon become the new home of refugees from Ukraine. But how much truth is there behind it?

Düsseldorf’s Rethelstrasse in focus: The video locates the “layoff scandal” in Düsseldorf’s Rethelstrasse. A busy street containing apartments, shops and even a funeral home. However, despite the clip's viral notoriety, there is no concrete evidence or reports of layoffs or plans to house refugees in the area. Düsseldorf, the beating heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, denies the story.
Opinion leaders take a stand
It's not just the city taking a stand. Important voices such as the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Flight and Integration as well as the German Tenants' Association of North Rhine-Westphalia (DMB NRW) paint a clear picture: There are no signs of such mass dismissals. “A pipe dream,” as some would say.
Not for the first time: A look back! It was only a few years ago that there was already a wave of these allegations. The Internet is a repository for stories – true and not so true. A similar accusation was made once when it was said that a retirement home in Hamburg needed to be converted. But this claim also turned out to be unfounded.
Conclusion: Between fact and fiction
In times when false reports often spread faster than the truth, it is important to remain critical. The alleged termination of 100 tenants in Düsseldorf? A duck, as it turns out. But this story reminds us of the importance of questioning information and distinguishing truth from myth. Because this is the only way we can get a clear and undistorted picture of the world.
