Protect user accounts twice, but how?

Our cooperation partner Safer Internet shows how you can protect your user account twice with so-called two-step authentication.

A password can be stolen faster than you think. If you still want to reliably protect your user account on Facebook, Instagram & Co., you should definitely use two-step authentication. We explain what lies behind this term.

The media repeatedly reports about hacked online platforms and leaked access data - the consternation in such cases is always enormous. We say: Prevention is better! If you want to reliably protect your online user accounts from unauthorized access , you can take other measures secure password two-stage authentication .

What is Two-Step Authentication?

Two-step authentication (also called two-step verification or two-factor authentication) is an additional security measure to protect a user account. In addition to the password, another security component be entered when logging in, e.g. B. a verification code . Only those who know both components – i.e. password and confirmation code – can log into the account in question. In other words, even if a hacker steals your password, they will also need your cell phone or another security key to access your account.

How does two-step authentication work?

If two-step authentication is activated, you will need an additional confirmation code or security key in addition to the password. You can get this via various methods , e.g. E.g.:

  • SMS code to stored cell phone number,
  • automatically generated voice call to stored cell phone number,
  • Security code via code generator app ,
  • Email to the email address provided,
  • physical security key (e.g. special USB sticks ),
  • Software security key,
  • Security codes to print out ,
  • Etc.

Each code is uniquely created for your account and can only be used once. Which authentication methods you can actually use depends on the respective platform. As a rule, several methods be activated in parallel - this is definitely recommended, as individual methods can always fail (e.g. if cell phone reception breaks down).

Which platforms offer two-step authentication?

The two-step authentication system is now on many platforms and online services - unfortunately only a few users know this because it not activated by default but must first be switched on by the user themselves.

Here you will find instructions on how to activate and use two-step authentication :

The website twofactauth.org lists all online services that support two-step authentication.

What are code generator apps?

With a code generator app, for various online platforms can be generated directly on your cell phone Advantage: The code generator also works without an internet or mobile phone connection.

You can find free apps for two-step authentication here:

Can you lock yourself out of your account using two-step authentication?

YES! For example, if you use a code generator app for two-step authentication and have to reinstall this app (e.g. when changing your cell phone), you will no longer have a connection to the individual online platforms - no confirmation codes can be generated! That's why, to be on the safe side, we recommend always several methods for two-step authentication (e.g. SMS, code generator app and email) and, above all, printing out codes - so you're on the safe side even if all break digital ropes!
