In the beginning there was the chicken.
Or the egg? In any case, at some point there were chickens that laid eggs that hatched into chicks that became chickens. When the first chickens walked the earth, there was no heavy traffic, so chickens didn't need high-visibility vests. But these warning vests are supposed to have another purpose, namely to scare off hawks. In a video, the Green Party politician Cem Özdemir apparently promotes these vests - but apparently many people did not recognize the context in which the not-serious video was made.

The stumbling block: The chicken safety vest video

On April 21st, a 35-second video from the Stuttgart Green Party appeared in which Cem Özdemir praised the advantages of high-visibility vests for chickens.
Preliminary remark: From the beginning, both the title of the video and the description contained a hint as to why the video was created in the first place (namely as a humorous addendum to another video), which a look at the web archive (see HERE ) proves.

The title of the video is “ Cem Özdemir, what good are high-visibility vests for chickens? (Follow up to 420 interview) .”

The description also points out the satirical nature of the video: “ Context: This video is a follow-up to a previous video on cannabis legalization and should be understood with a wink ”.

Artificial excitement from a relevant site

A relevant site that defines itself as “conservative, liberal, independent” (archived HERE ), was outraged by the video from the Stuttgart Greens: In a video comment entitled “ Now completely crazy: Cem Özdemir presents high-visibility vests for chickens ” claimed the commentator said that Özedemir and the Greens posted the video “without any hint of satire.”

The commentator then goes on to complain about how far the Greens are from reality, that farmers have completely different concerns than hawks and that these warning vests are animal cruelty.

The previous video: It's actually about cannabis

In the previous video , which was appropriately released on April 20th (4/20), Özdemir also uses the high-visibility vests for chickens when he is interrupted by a skateboarder who asks him “ Cem! When is Bubatz legal? (Bubatz is a made-up term for a joint, i.e. a cigarette with cannabis).

Özdemir then describes in detail how the Greens feel about legalization and that this should be tackled as soon as possible.

The audience wanted to see more

Apparently it wasn't just in the comments that people asked for more information about the high-visibility vests for chickens, i.e. the part of the video that was actually just a humorous hook for the actual topic, but was never meant seriously in the first video.
To be on the safe side, we asked the Greens again and got the following answer:

“Hello, the high-visibility vest video should be viewed in context: It is an addition to another video on cannabis legalization:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YvAergWqWI&lc=UgyNxpOsr0x8qTnNTbx4AaABAg The video had an explanation about the high-visibility vests "What viewers wanted after the publication of the cannabis video, so it's a "follow-up" with a wink to the original video."

AfD has now submitted an application for “protective vests for the German chicken”

It is now uncertain whether the AfD Reinickendorf was serious about this, wanted to forestall the Greens, or whether they also wanted to be satirical (as they claim). The BZ-Berlin (see HERE ) reported on May 12th that AfD representatives from Reinickendorf submitted a request to the district parliament entitled “Protective vests for the German chicken” (printed matter number 0431/XXI).

The application states that the high-visibility vest is necessary to “ protect German chickens from hawk attacks Again, the justification is the supposedly frequent hawk attacks, which suggests that the MPs really used Özdemir's video as a template.

However, the application was apparently withdrawn quite quickly.

Conclusion

We assume that the AfD Reinickendorf also got the joke, but that can't be said about other people who downloaded the video and distributed it on social media channels: Many thought that Özdemir was following his demand for chicken safety vests seriously meant.

these high-visibility vests really do exist , but they don't serve as much protection against hawks. In Rhineland-Palatinate, the owner of some chickens puts protective vests on their animals to protect them from the too wild mating of the rooster, which could otherwise all too easily injure the chickens during the so-called kicking act.

Someone fry us a chicken! Or an egg. Depending on which comes first.

“That poor girl!” A photo of a girl with noticeably thin legs is currently shocking many Internet users.
What's wrong with this girl's legs?
