Now that the first COVID-19 illnesses have occurred in Italy, the first conspiracy theories are now being shared there.

The label on a bottle is intended to prove that there was already a warning about the coronavirus in 2009:

The warning in Italian

“Ragazzi, this year's comprato nel 2009,
laid down a little something that indicates the frequency”

in German:

“Guys, I bought this in 2009,
read what it says, what the arrow points to”

So let's take a closer look:

“attivo su Coronavirus”, in German “active against coronavirus”.

Why is “coronavirus” mentioned specifically?

The note already states that the agent works efficiently against viruses, but coronaviruses are a little more stubborn and aggressive. The most “famous” representatives are the coronaviruses that cause SARS, MERS and, since December 2019, COVID-19.

You can also find this information on older bottles on German labels, as we reported , and that also makes sense:
because the coronavirus doesn't exist. Corona is a whole family of viruses, named after their specific appearance under the microscope, which resembles the spikes of a crown (Latin: corona).

In addition to 2019-nCoV (Wuhan virus), well-known representatives of the coronaviruses also include SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV . In order not to list every known and lesser-known coronavirus individually, they wisely decided to simply write the “family name” on the packaging.

The confusion surrounding “the” coronavirus

Unfortunately, the term “coronavirus” for 2019-nCoV has now become embedded in many people’s minds instead of giving it a clear and simple name such as “Wuhan virus”. However, this is now leading many people to equate the concept of family with the new virus.

Again clearly:

  • The name of the new coronavirus: 2019-nCoV
  • The disease caused by the new coronavirus: COVID-19

However, information on labels, including older ones, does not indicate that a remedy helps against “the” new coronavirus, but rather against coronaviruses in general.

Conclusion

Even in Italy there is no big conspiracy, no sensational indication that the new coronavirus was already known in 2009.
