“Win one of 150 iPhones 8 worth €859”

The Austrian Red Cross is giving away 150 smartphones? Quick guess round: How many Facebook users are now skeptical about this slogan? One wants to hope enough. But sometimes the devices are actually raffled off!

As always, the first look

As we have been preaching for years, the first look should always be towards the organizer. Is this transparent? Is the specified organizer also the real organizer? In the present case it turns out to be quite simple.

The Facebook page called Friends.Red Cross has a detailed imprint and a clear description of what happens on this Facebook page. It is simply the site of the Red Cross Lottery in Austria, as you can find out:

The ROTKREUZ lottery is the largest prize lottery in Austria. The net proceeds from the lottery will be used to expand the assistance provided by the Austrian Red Cross and its regional associations domestically, particularly in the areas of rescue services, health and social services, blood donation services, disaster relief, tracing services, training. , further education and training, dissemination of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Red Cross Conventions as well as for the Austrian Youth Red Cross.

No liking or commenting, just buying tickets!

In contrast to typical fake competitions on Facebook, you will also notice that there are no requests to like, share or comment in the status message. Instead, a link shortened to bit.ly that leads to a subdomain of the Austrian Red Cross.

At this point you will notice that the competition is NOT taking place on Facebook, but is taking place outside of Facebook. You are on the real WCC page and here you can buy tickets for a lottery. This is a value lottery; according to the WCC, all prizes were provided by partner companies and the net profit of the lottery was used to expand the aid service.
