In a digital world where the internet has become an indispensable part of our lives, online security is not a topic that should be taken lightly. Although many of us spend most of our days online, we tend to overlook certain habits that can put our online security at risk.

Ten everyday habits that make internet users vulnerable to attacks

Our goal? To help you review and, if necessary, change your online routines to create a safer digital environment.

1. Weak passwords

We all know how important a strong password is, but how often do we ignore this rule and instead use simple, easy-to-remember (and easy-to-guess) passwords? Even more worrying is the frequent reuse of the same passwords for different accounts, which opens the door to hackers. ( 5 tips for a secure password )

2. Non-updating software

Regularly updating software may seem like a hassle, but it is often essential to your online security. They often contain security patches that fix known vulnerabilities and make your devices less vulnerable to attacks.

3. Clicking on suspicious links

A common trap that many Internet users fall into is clicking on links from unknown senders. These can lead to phishing sites or result in the installation of malware. So be careful and check links before clicking on them. ( Phishing Guide: Protect yourself and your data from fraudulent attacks )

4. Overlooking HTTPS

The absence of HTTPS in a website's URL means that the data you send to that website is not encrypted. This means your data can be intercepted. Make sure the websites you visit use HTTPS.

5. Not using two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an additional layer of security by requiring another authentication method in addition to the password. If you don't use 2FA, you make it easier for an attacker to access your accounts.

6. Oversharing on social media

Social media is a powerful tool that can also pose a potential security risk if used carelessly. Personal information can be used by potential attackers to guess your identity or manipulate you.

7. Using public Wi-Fi networks without VPN

Public Wi-Fi networks are often insecure and your online activities can easily be intercepted. Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can help protect your data and ensure your online activities remain private.

8. No backups

If you fall victim to a ransomware attack, you could lose all of your data if you don't perform regular backups. Therefore, it is important that you back up your important data regularly and keep it in a safe place. ( This is NOT how you should react to a cyber attack! )

9. Downloading software from unsafe sources

Downloading software from unknown or unsafe sources may cause you to accidentally install malware on your device. Download software only from trusted sources.

10. Antivirus program not activated

Without an antivirus program, you are more vulnerable to malware and other malicious software. It is important to use a reliable antivirus and update it regularly.

The internet poses many risks, but by becoming aware of your habits and changing them, you can create a safer digital environment for yourself. Remember that your online security is in your hands.
