Facebook is becoming more transparent and shows what information visited websites pass on to Facebook.

How to find out how Facebook knows so much about you! – The most important thing at the beginning:

  1. New tool “Activities outside of Facebook” already available
  2. More transparency for users in personalized advertising
  3. Activities can be controlled and deleted

You know what it's like: you're talking to friends about a planned vacation or a new purchase, and a short time later you see advertising for it. The assumption that the network giant taps into microphones from cell phones and computers is obvious and has been a persistent theory for years. Facebook has already dismissed this out of hand several times and now wants to show how it can get information about users.

Activities outside of Facebook

Facebook released a new feature on Tuesday that shows how information about a user is shared. You can find this tool under “Settings and privacy” – “Settings” – “Activities outside of Facebook” under “Your Facebook information”. This shows what information website operators collect and pass on to Facebook.

More information and control over third-party knowledge

For example, holiday offers can be shown within the platform after you have visited a travel portal. The advertising does not have to relate to the website visited, but can possibly display suitable offers from hotels.

The network gives an example: “Tanja buys a pair of shoes in a clothing store online. He uses our business tools and sends information about Tanja's activities to us. We receive information about Tanja's activities outside of Facebook and store it in her Facebook account. The activities are recorded as 'visited the clothing website' and 'made a purchase'. Tanja sees an ad on Facebook with a 10% discount voucher on her next purchase in the online store.”

Clear activity history

The new tool also gives users the option to delete the history of these activities. This means that advertisements that match these activities will no longer be displayed. However, information from third-party companies will continue to be transmitted. To personalize the advertising, the activities are then displayed directly on the platform. This happens, for example, when you like a page.

You can also decide on future activities outside of the platform. This setting can be found under “further options”. However, the following also applies here: You can deactivate the linking of the information to the account. You cannot switch off the fact that websites continue to collect and forward information.

Tool available now

The new tool is already available to all users worldwide. Mark Zuckerberg explains in a blog post that Facebook has been working on this for a long time.
This means that Facebook achieves a new “level of transparency and control”. Users are currently asked to check and, if necessary, adjust their privacy settings in their news feed. The new “Activities outside of Facebook” tool is not explicitly mentioned here and is not particularly easy to find at first glance.
