In connection with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which we reported , Facebook has to pay the injured parties a total of $725 million in compensation. An out-of-court settlement has been reached and Meta, Facebook's parent company, can avoid a possible lawsuit, a US judge has now ruled.

The company was accused of deceiving users about control of their personal data. In fact, Facebook is said to have granted third parties, such as Cambridge Analytica, access to this data. Although Meta denies any responsibility, the company still pays.

Facebook users from the USA, and some from us too, are currently seeing this information:

Injured parties from the USA can claim compensation: If you want to do this, you must do so online by August 25, 2023. The requirement is that you had a Facebook account between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 and had a residential address in the USA. The claim for compensation for users with a residential address in the USA can be submitted here.

But European users can also receive compensation

In Europe, the issue is that Facebook did not adequately protect its users' data, which resulted in the records of 533 million Facebook users falling into the hands of hackers. Several court rulings went against Facebook, and the Irish data protection authority also imposed a fine of 265 million euros.

Anyone who lives in the EU or the European Economic Area can claim damages from Facebook. The Irish data protection NGO Digital Rights Ireland (DRI) is planning a class action lawsuit against Facebook. Anyone whose data protection rights have been violated is entitled to financial compensation if it can be proven that they were affected.

Step 1: This is how you can check whether you are also affected

To check this, you can use the website haveibeenpwned.com . Note: This is recommended for any data leak!

Even if the provided field says “ email address ,” you can enter your phone number there. If a message then appears that you have been affected by the Facebook data leak, you can claim compensation. It is important that the telephone number contains the correct country code, for example +43 for Austria or +49 for Germany.

Directions:

Enter your phone number including your country code in this field

European users can also receive compensation! This way you can check whether you are also affected

If you are not affected, you will receive this message in GREEN

Step 2: As a data subject you can join the Digital Rights Ireland class action lawsuit using this form : https://www.digitalrights.ie/facebook/ .

To do this, simply enter your name, email address and the mobile number concerned.

Once you have done this, you will receive a confirmation email from DRI stating that a legal team is in the process of creating a “mandate form” that will allow people whose data has been made public to join the class action lawsuit against Facebook to connect. As soon as this is done, you will receive another email to “officially register”
