The situation is serious. There is war in Ukraine. Horrible images are flooded into timelines on TikTok every second.
There are a lot of fake videos of the Ukraine war on TikTok: people re-enact the war, use dark sounds, show videos that are a few years old or use gaming sequences from war games to increase their reach.
Through this conscious or unconscious distribution, creators spread fear and panic. Not only are these images disturbing, but some are just plain FAKE.
“offen un' honestly” checked some videos for you and exposed what's really behind them. Destroyed houses, rocket attacks, tanks rolling through the streets: social media has been full of such images since the start of the war in Ukraine! However, many posts seem dubious and can be revealed as fakes with careful research .
Is war being used here to gain a lot of reach?!
TikTok plays an important role in this war.
In addition to real recordings from Ukraine, there is also numerous fake news on the platform. To counter this, even Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has explicitly named TikTokers as a group that could help end the war. “offen un' honestly” took to the digital front and scrolled through our TikTok feed for days. Numerous videos were found that were FAKE! For example, the recordings come from the past and show actors or video games. You can find out how you can recognize and expose such fake content in this video.
This is how you can recognize a fake on TikTok:
“Open and honest” explain how you can tell for yourself whether a video is real or not. That's how it's done:
- Check how long the TikTok account has been around and what has been posted there so far: Is the account new or has it never posted anything about Ukraine? These are indications that these videos could be fake.
- Take a screenshot: You can then start a reverse image search and find out when and where the video was actually recorded.
- Check the soundtrack: In which videos was the sound used? If you see very different videos, they are probably not current recordings from Ukraine.
Misinformation, lies and fake news are a great danger on TikTok because TikTok has the ability to influence users who are still very young. Not only are they very active on TikTok, but it is also the case that political opinions are not yet very pronounced among people so young. This gives others the opportunity to influence young users.
