The hackers, who operate under the name “AgainstTheWest” and who say they are taking action against companies and countries that, contrary to what their name suggests, oppose Western interests, successfully announced the video network TikTok and the messaging platform WeChat to have hacked.
This claim was supported with screenshots that allegedly show a database that is said to contain numerous user data from the two platforms. The attackers allegedly have 790 gigabytes of material containing 2.05 billion entries at their disposal. Among other things, it includes statistics, authentication tokens, source code and user data.
If this claim were true, it would be the largest security incident on the Internet, but it now turns out that this attack never took place.
Hack never happened
Soon after, news of the alleged hack spread on social media and attracted the attention of experts who took a closer look at the footage. It soon became clear that there wasn't much truth to the hacker group's claims.
IT expert Luca Hammer is certain that the data is publicly requested information from third-party providers and test data.
Troy Hunt, the developer of the website “ Have I Been Pwned ?”, where users can find out whether they have been affected by data leaks, is also not convinced that the alleged hack actually occurred, as the hacker group was unable to provide any further evidence provide information that could have confirmed the attack.
TikTok itself points out that the source code made public has no connection with the TikTok backend systems and there has never been any merging of data with WeChat.
