The short video service TikTok wants to forestall a possible ban in the USA and Europe and is considering a separation from the Chinese parent ByteDance . As US media have learned from insider circles, corresponding plans are to be discussed in the executive suite of the social media portal. The spin-off is intended to maintain the continued operation of the service and its profitability.

National security in focus

“TikTok’s leadership is discussing the possibility of separating from Chinese parent company ByteDance to defend itself against allegations that it would endanger national security,” according to a Bloomberg report. However, a sale of the subsidiary, which could lead to a complete sale or an initial public offering of securities, is seen as a “last resort”.

“Whether it actually goes on sale depends on whether national security officials in different countries approve the portal’s existing practices or not,” said the experts. However, they also emphasize that the TikTok bosses could probably not decide on the implementation of such spin-off plans entirely on their own. It is more likely that the Chinese government will take the helm in this matter into its own hands. “She would have to agree to the sale. “In view of their previous statements on the subject, they could refuse to do so,” according to the assessment.

Pressure from the White House

As early as 2020, during the term of former US President Donald Trump, fears were raised that TikTok could be used specifically by China to manipulate public opinion in other countries or to act as a spying tool. At that time too, the pressure was increased on the portal operators and the aim was to get them to sell their own app to new US owners. But under the new President Joe Biden, these plans were dropped again. In view of the recent tensions between the two superpowers, the White House is now returning to the old line
