“As we continue to grow, Europe is vital to our future. In just four years we have invested heavily in Europe. We now have thousands of employees dedicated to ensuring TikTok provides a safe, inclusive and authentic environment for our growing European community of over 100 million users,” the short video platform says on its website.
TikTok update to protect against disinformation
Over the past few years, TikTok says it has been committed to building trust through greater transparency - whether through quarterly reports to enforce our community guidelines, signing the voluntary codes against disinformation and hate speech , or developing an API for platform research . The platform is proud that “we have contributed to the drafting of the strengthened EU code of conduct against disinformation and are able to publish our first report under the new code. This builds on our work as advocates of the previous code.”
It goes on to say on the internet:
“Since the publication of the new Code in June 2022, we have worked extensively with the Code’s permanent taskforce and working groups to provide as much information as possible about our approach and enforcement of the Code. This is part of our ongoing efforts to implement the requirements of the Digital Services Act, under which the Code will find a new legislative basis. It also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to uphold and fulfill our commitments as a responsible and trustworthy platform.”
TikTok's first baseline report includes more than 2,500 data points from 30 EU/EEA countries for the final quarter of 2022. Some key points are listed here:
- Less than 1 in 10,000 views involved content that was identified and removed for violating the harmful misinformation policy.
- Because TikTok does not allow political actors to run ads , the company removed 191 ads that violated this policy. Additionally, TikTok takes a multi-pronged approach to enforcing strict advertising policies, specifically prohibiting misleading, inauthentic and fraudulent behavior and accounts.
- “We have taken measures to protect our community from misinformation and have connected users to reliable sources of information on topics such as Covid-19, the Holocaust and the war in Ukraine. Our Covid-19 information center has been viewed more than 5 billion times worldwide since July 2020, and at the start of the war in Ukraine, we partnered with the National Association for Media Literacy Education and MediaWise to provide digital literacy tips to help our community help them evaluate the online content they view.”
Nevertheless, investments are still necessary in the future
Even though this is the first time TikTok has been able to provide such detailed information, the company is aware that there is still a lot of work ahead of them. In the coming months, the platform will invest in a number of initiatives including:
- Expanding community empowerment efforts through new security features and in-app resources, such as: B. the expansion of labels for state-controlled media (which now covers all EU27 countries).
- “We continue to invest in our work to address the increased risk and impact of misleading information as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine by taking action against content or behavior that threatens the security of our platform and devoting resources to protecting our community .
- Expanding our fact-checking program to all EU/EEA countries to improve language coverage and increase the amount of information we check.
- Strengthening our approach to combating disinformation in our advertising policies.”
TikTok: Commitment to Transparency
“We believe that the code of conduct against disinformation is an important step for the entire industry. We also believe that, as a platform that has not been around for very long and is in a unique position, we need to innovate to find solutions to these long-standing challenges in the industry. “We will continue to invest fully and collaborate with others to disrupt disinformation and create authentic online experiences for our communities,” TikTok said
