The claim

A bomb allegedly exploded in Germany on February 26th. This is shown in a video that is currently being shared on TikTok.

Our conclusion

The video on TikTok shows the wrong context. It is not a bomb attack in the photo, but a major fire in the industrial port in Bremen in 2020.

At the beginning of a TikTok video, a label with the words "Tonight's explosion" appears while black smoke rises in the background. “First bombing raid in Germany – war?” (sic!) is what it says afterwards. However, at the very end it says that the video is of poor quality, so the creator assumes it is a “fake”.

Although the video has already been viewed 250,000 times, there are still users who believe that it is a real bombing. Some comments include speculations such as "Warning shot from Putin" and "I'm leaving."

Others are skeptical and suspect that it could be a fire in Bremen, but they are not sure which one. Our research revealed that the video actually comes from Bremen and may show a major fire in April 2020, as the fire department confirmed.

Video was shot near the industrial port in Bremen

After the video with the alleged explosion was published on TikTok, Correctiv sent it to various public authorities in Bremen for review. Karl-Henry Lahmann, the spokesman for the town hall, further referred to the Bremen State Image Office. There you could reach Mirko Becker, who was able to identify the exact location of the video: The recording was made on Bonifaciusstrasse, a short alley near the industrial harbor.

We then compared the location with Google Street View and were able to confirm several details in the TikTok video, such as the yellow and brown striped house on the right side of the street as well as the pink house that is a little further down the street and protrudes slightly . We also spotted the blue tarpaulin trailer seen in the TikTok video on Google Street View on the same street.

Presumably fire in the industrial port from 2020 can be seen

Even though no bombs have fallen on Bremen recently, there have been a few major fires in recent years. For example, a construction dock in the Lürssen shipyard burned in 2018. Mirko Becker from the state film archive and Michael Richartz, spokesman for the Bremen fire department, remember the major fire on April 28, 2020 , where ten large warehouses at the industrial port burned, when they saw the TikTok video. “The video could possibly be about this event.” The Bremen police also assume that the video shows the fire on April 28, 2020, as spokeswoman Franka Haedke said upon request.

It is also logical in the sense that fire brigade footage from back then shows a similar column of black smoke as can now be seen in the clip. In addition, the video was recorded on Bonifaciusstrasse in the southwest direction, which is close to the industrial site where the fire broke out - more specifically, near the Louis Krages lumber shop, as mentioned by the daily port report.
